Derwin Hinson grew up in North Carolina playing and singing in his family's gospel band. In his early 20s he joined Charlie Louvin’s band and the next week played his first time on the Grand Ole Opry. For years he worked as a sideman in Nashville and hosted a weekly bluegrass night at the Bell Cove Club, where Bill Monroe was a frequent guest. A multi-instrumentalist, Derwin has taught lessons since 1977. For years he has toured as the "One-Man Gospel Band”, hosted a weekly bluegrass jam, and makes merry as a premier Santa Claus.

Derwin's students say:

Derwin always takes an interest in each student and makes sure his teaching is tailored to each person’s desires and abilities.
He is a patient teacher and has endowed many of his students with a never ending love for music.
I don’t understand how a man with his talent can listen and play with a smile on his face while his students fumble through the chords.
Derwin is well known throughout the area as an excellent musician and teacher.
